Gender is definitely nothing more than a social construct, but it's an incredibly prevalent social construct and is usually one of the most prominent factors in how a person identifies themself and how others perceive them. Just because it's a social construct doesn't mean you can deny it completely and claim that transness is invalid. If someone wants to do something that makes them happier or more comfortable with themself then why would you deny that of them?

I don’t deny feelings or even a sense of identity. I believe dysphoria is a real experience. I also recognize that adults have the right to do what they want medically. The focus of my blog is children and adolescents. I question whether every gender nonconforming young person will ultimately and finally be happy with hormones and surgeries–a medical solution to a psychological dilemma. I think there is a rush to define young people as transgender, and very little support for helping them look at other less drastic treatments and ways to cope with their dysphoria.
