I’m a concerned parent, not some monster (although it’s obviously easy to set me up as an ogre for anonymous target practice on Tumblr). Let’s just assume for the moment, Anon, that you and I are decent human beings who take no pleasure in teen suicide, and would like to prevent it. (If we don’t assume that, there’s no point in even having a discussion, if that’s what you want.)
I don’t buy the idea that a person must medically transition or die. A teen who wants to kill him or herself is obviously struggling with a lot of pain. Maybe that pain includes dysphoria. I personally think we are doing a disservice to these kids by giving them only these two options (or agreeing with THEM that these are the only options). I wrote a whole post on this a while back. There was also some good discussion in response. If you want to engage me more on this, in good faith, please read these posts, then get back to me.
Do I think there might be some young people for whom medical transition is the one and only alternative to suicide? Maybe. But I think it is a far, far lower number than the media would have us believe.
