Alice Dreger, author of Galileo’s Middle Finger, has been blogging and tweeting about the pediatric transition trend lately. She is beginning to read the writings of detransitioned women and just posted this tweet yesterday.
If you have Twitter, consider tweeting to her if you are one of the gay or lesbian adults she mentions who is GLAD to have avoided transition.
Alice Dreger is a thoughtful medical ethicist who cut her teeth professionally by throwing down as a real deal advocate for body autonomy and the right to bodily integrity for intersex people, especially children. She gets complexity and nuance, and she’s not about dogma. I encourage my readers–particularly detransitioned women, women who would have understood themselves as “dysphoric”/trans if born later, and women who are living stealth ftm and passing as male but no longer “identify”–to contact her and share your experiences.
I insisted I was “a boy” for years before I really understood biological sex (ages 3-7). I am glad I wasn’t born in a time and space where my parents would have put me on puberty blockers, just because I was uncomfortable with the gender role that was being forced on me. I had a mentally-ill parent with some tendencies toward Munchausen syndrome by proxy, so it would have been a perfect storm.
I never became comfortable with my gender role, and sometimes I still struggle with discomfort surrounding my biology, but on the whole I am perfectly happy just being a gender non-conforming woman. I hate that we are telling kids that liking certain toys or clothes means they have to change their bodies, before they are old enough to understand what it means in the long term.
