Dr. Dreger tweeted: “Hearing from some detransitioned folks who say dysphoria about sexed body parts should not be simply interpreted as transgender.”
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this blogging gig, it’s that the experience of dysphoria is a real thing. But what I have ALSO learned (from now dozens of formerly dysphoric women’s blogs and messages to me) is that “transition” should not be seen as the automatic solution to the problem of sex/gender dysphoria. On the contrary: women who lived through dysphoria in childhood, but then resolved it to embrace themselves as female, often go on to have a rich appreciation of themselves as strong women in adulthood.
The hatred a girl or woman might feel for her own sexed body has a multitude of causes, and each story is unique. But respect for those life experiences is not the same as meekly going along with a regressive narrative which says that substituting male secondary sex characteristics for the despised female ones is the wisest and most compassionate thing to do.
